Celebrate Mom

Celebrate Mom

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. While some might be looking forward to a nice brunch and maybe getting to relax a bit, others might be stressed on how to show their mom how much they love and appreciate her. Here are some fun and creative ideas to show mom how much you care.

Find a mom to bless. While this might be your own mom, Mother’s Day is also a great opportunity to bless those in our lives who have encouraged us or our children like a mom. This could be their Sunday school teacher, teacher, or coach. It could also be someone in your life that have children but they don’t live close by. Pray and ask God to show you who He wants you to bless. There are many women who invest their lives into others who don’t have children of their own.

Treat mom to a meal! This might be taking her out to her favorite restaurant or making her breakfast in bed. Whatever you do don’t let mom cook or clean. During the meal have everyone share different things they appreciate about mom. Sometimes it can be easier to write them down.  You can fill a Mason jar with everyone’s thoughts and that way she can save them as a reminder too.

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” Proverbs 31:10-17

Give mom the night off. This might take a little more work but arranging for mom to have a couple of hours to herself can go a long way! It might involve asking family or a babysitter to come help out with babysitting or shuttling to activities. But whatever the case don’t let mom jump in. You can give her suggestions or even give her gift cards to get her nails done or go read her favorite book at a coffee shop. Before she comes home try and have the dishes put away, kitchen cleaned and if possible the kids in bed that way she doesn’t feel like she has to do a bunch of chores when she gets home.

Give her meaningful gifts. It could be a subscription to Risen Magazine, her favorite flowers or a new Bible. Here are some of great gift ideas: a phone cover with an encouraging message from Prone to Wander, a worship CD, CSB Study Bible for Women, and Bridgewater candles. Bridgewater candles provide meals to orphans overseas with the purchase of their candles. To date they have provided over 5 million meals! If she enjoys reading Hope Heals by Jay and Katherine Wolf and Ridiculous Faith by Shelene Bryan are great gifts too.

Have a movie night with mom. Grab Like a Country Song, order takeout and have a family night in. Everyone will enjoy the heart-warming tale of Jake Reeson, an up-and-coming country singer who has the whole world in his hands until his ego gets in the way. With nothing but partying and music on his mind, Jake is forced to take a hard look at himself and the ashes around him after life slowly falls apart.

Leave her notes of encouragement. Have everyone write an encouraging verse and something they are thankful for about mom. Hide the notes throughout the house. You can write them with dry erase markers on the mirror. Get her favorite coffee and leave a note with it. Put one in her sock drawer or on the steering wheel of her car. The goal is to have her find the notes throughout the week.

Pray for your mom. Whether your mom is your best friend or you have become distant, prayer is one of the best gifts that you can offer her. Ask your mom how you can pray for her and commit to pray daily for her. If you live close to each other, get together for coffee or a meal and pray for each other. If you live far away, schedule a phone date or facetime/Skype if possible. If conflict or strife has caused a rife in your relationship, pray that God would reconcile each of you to Himself and to each other. Pray also that He would give you both hearts to forgive and the words to share with your mom.
