Interviewed for Risen Magazine
Risen Magazine: You just launched a new podcast, Equip and Empower, What’s your vision for this?
Christine Caine: My vision for this one is not conversation-based. It’s me bringing alive the word of God. I think, for me, because God’s word has brought such change and transformation in my own life and freedom and hope, I want to use principles from the word of God to communicate that because I really believe that it can change people’s lives. I believe that it’s living and active and it can bring transformation. And for it to be proclaimed from a faith-filled perspective, a hope-filled perspective, a life-filled perspective. But I find that you can basically go there and the word brings life and hope and answers. And for me, it is a word of life and it is a word of hope. Now with that, you get uncomfortable at times. You’re going to be challenged at times. I think because in my own life, of thirty years of following Jesus, and being led by the word of God, and rooted in the word of God, and seeing the freedom that it’s brought and being willing simultaneously to embrace the pain of recovery – I come from a background of abuse and adoption and just some brokenness – I’ve seen healing in my life. But, there’s been a direct correlation between the degree to which I’m willing to embrace the healing and I’m willing to embrace the pain that comes with that. So I want to be able to teach the word and show people that this can bring hope. And because, in my own life, there’s the testimony of the freedom, I think both of those things going together, this practical application so that’s the equip and empowering. So it’s not just inspiration because anyone can be inspired, but most of us are like, “Please teach me how to live. Please teach me how to get through. Please teach me how to get free. Please teach me how to get up from failure and to keep moving forward.”
I truly believe that what you listen to truly determines how you think and how you act. And so we have got so many different voices coming at us in the world today from so many different directions. And there’s a lot of fear and there’s a lot of negativity and a lot of that just cripples and paralyzes you into inaction.
And because I’ve been there and I continue to go there, it flows out of my life. So my vision for this is that you’ll put it on and 25 minutes later, you will not only feel inspired, but you will truly feel equipped and empowered. Whatever season of life you’re in, whatever stage of life you’re in, you are going to think, “You know what? I can get over this and move forward and make a difference in my world today.” That’s very important for me, not just inspiring people. I want you to be happier today, but I want people to be fruitful and effective and fulfill their purpose and I think that’s what this podcast is going to help people do.

RM: I love that you are giving actual tools for real life application. What will the format be like? Will topics be tied to scripture or will they be first person testimony through your own life or a little of both?
CC: It’s me teaching and it all flows together. I will always be teaching a text, and then my life is woven all the way through it. That’s just the way that I communicate. I’m not a massive scholar in that way. But what I can teach you is out of my own life experience and my own journey, how that scripture comes alive for me and how it can be applied in your life, wherever you are, to make a difference. Because I think for a lot of us you’ve got to connect the head and the heart and practical application, and that’s what I hope to do. And because a lot of times we don’t often hear a whole lot of women teaching the Bible in that sense. I think that this is great for young women. It’s highly inspiring. I’m hoping it activates something on the inside of them to think, “Wow, I can do that.” I often hear a lot of men preaching and teaching in that way, but not women, and so to hear a woman with confidence and strength and courage be able to talk about a victorious overcoming life from the word of God, I think that in itself, sometimes the medium is the message in itself and I think for a lot of young women that’s going to bring hope. Now, of course, it’s not specifically a women’s podcast.
Every week there are topics about overcoming, about empowering people – overcoming failure, overcoming adversity, overcoming challenges, overcoming obstacles, overcoming brokenness. I love the fact that it’s out twice a week, because by the time we’ve been equipped and empowered on Monday, we’re living in very challenging times where it’s so easy to be overwhelmed by Thursday. We’re already feeling flat and going down. I’m like, “You know what? We need another sense of encouragement.”

I truly believe that what you listen to truly determines how you think and how you act. And so we have got so many different voices coming at us in the world today from so many different directions. And there’s a lot of fear and there’s a lot of negativity and a lot of that just cripples and paralyzes you into inaction. And you think, “I just want to escape.” I’m hoping that this inspires you to action to say, “I can get back up. I can overcome this giant. I can get around this hurdle. I can keep going if I failed or made a mistake.” That’s what my hope is, is to help you to keep taking that next step.
“Jesus is this hope we have. An anchor for our soul.” A lot of people are drifting and feeling overwhelmed because there’s no anchor. And unless you get that anchor right, these turbulent times and the storm that we’re in, is scary. It really is.
RM: I feel like one of the biggest things people need right now is hope. If you don’t have any faith, it’s a very scary thing. There’s so many people that aren’t feeling valued, that feel worthless, maybe even a lot of shame and they’re wondering how this will ever change. And I think the absence of hope is a really, really daunting and scary thing for most people.
CC: I’m so grateful for you for helping to get the word out because, I mean, that’s why the Bible says, “Jesus is this hope we have. An anchor for our soul.” A lot of people are drifting and feeling overwhelmed because there’s no anchor. And unless you get that anchor right, these turbulent times and the storm that we’re in, is scary. It really is. There are so many great podcasts out there and this is distinctly a teaching and preaching one, but this is hope-filled and faith-filled. I think it will connect. Often people tell me, even people that have no faith background really, that they really connect with my teaching. Because of the work I do with our anti-slavery organization and my own story of overcoming abuse and abandonment, and those stories are woven into the fabric of every message so it connects with people no matter where they are on their faith journey.
