The Future Legends scholarship fund started out in an unusual way- after a successful retirement party for San Diego golf pro, Chuck Courtney. The PGA Tour pro was honored by the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club for his accomplishments as the winner of two Tour events and Head Professional for 23 years . After the big party was over, the organizers realized they still had some money left over and decided to create a lasting legacy.
In 2012 the Chuck Courtney Honorary Scholarship Fund was officially started but soon turned into a larger idea; pairing worthy students with scholarship money and a mentor to help them throughout the entire college experience. A person who could be a sounding board, give advice, and give students a step into a much bigger direction – not just a graduation but the foundation to become legendary in their own way.
For his part, Courtney has been thrilled to see the evolution of the initial idea, “Gee it’s been a wonderful experience all these many years since then. We’ve had several dozen kids that go through school, graduate.”
The Chuck Courtney Honorary Scholarship Fund evolved into Future Legends. A scholarship + mentoring program that has so far helped 20 past and current students navigate college; celebrating the triumphs and navigating the setback of higher education and not letting them stop the students.
Future Legends has one very simple goal – make sure each and every student in the program graduates. The mentors work with the foundation to make sure the students have what they need; from flying to a University to speak personally to school counselors, to acting as a reference for an internship or even providing resources for finding their first job out of college.
Both Courtney and those behind Future Legends hope to expand the program in the future and help pair more students with mentors.
