Indescribable: 100 Devotions for Kids About God and Science
If you have ever been around a young child, chances are you have experienced the “question stage.” Their inquisitive minds want to know how things work and why things happen the way they do. It can seem like their questions are unending and often times there aren’t answers to their questions or sometimes they aren’t able to quite understand the answers. For some the questions can be bothersome, but for Louie Giglio, he encourages it. Giglio’s recent book Indescribable: 100 Devotions for Kids About God and Science, is comprised of 100 devotions that encourage awe at God’s creativity with an in-depth look at space, galaxies, planets, geology, oceans, weather, animals, our minds, bodies and more. It takes the majesty of creation and pairs it with scientific findings, photography and illustrations that children can understand.

Each devotion features a “Be Amazed” section with fascinating facts, hands-on activities, and a closing prayer. Based on Giglio’s popular messages “Indescribable” and “How Great Is Our God,” Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God & Science will help kids discover the incredible creation of our indescribable God. Pastor and author, Giglio invites kids to think about the questions they encounter in day-to-day life and to find God’s glory in creation in his first-ever children’s book.
Risen writer, Mei Ling Nazar looked at this book with her three-year-old son and he loved it. The pictures captured his attention and he kept asking for it to be read to him. Nazar hadn’t even showed it to him. It was sitting on the office desk and he picked it up on his own and started looking through it. As a boy, he loves picking up dead bugs, going on hikes exploring for things, and learning about all the animals at the zoo. So, this book played off many of those loves.
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. “ Matthew 18:1-5
Giglio has established himself as the voice of a generation through the founding of Passion City Church and the ever-popular Passion Conference for college-aged students. With more than a million social media followers between his personal accounts and those of Passion, he has grown a platform of more than just college kids but also pastors, parents, and adults around the world.
One of Louie’s most viral sermons was on the scientific element laminin, and he often preaches and writes on the glory of God as displayed through creation. Indescribable builds on these themes in fun, kid-friendly ways that will engage a child’s heart and mind for the glory of God. Each devotion includes Scripture, a relevant illustration or story, a life application, and a prayer. In addition, each devotion includes a science section that can range from fun facts to creative experiments for kids to further engage with the content.
Have faith like a child. Whether you have a five-year old or you are fifty years old, each of us needs to have faith like a child. Take time this week to watch kids in action. It could be your own kids, kids at church or kids at the park. Take note of how they ask questions, how they love touching things and how they explore even the most mundane spots. Be willing to have that same kind of faith when it comes to your relationship with God. Pray and ask Him to show you what areas of your life need to be renewed to have that child-like faith.
Ask questions. It is okay to ask questions! We sometimes think that asking questions about the Christian faith is wrong, when in fact it can often make our faith stronger. If you have questions about the Christian faith, ask a friend in small group or pastor. They might not have the answers right away, but be willing to research with them and explore for answers. Also pray, your question might be something only God can reveal to you.
Encourage the faith of a child. It might be your child, a grandchild, a child that you mentor or a friend, take time this week to ask God how you can encourage their faith. It might be getting a book like Indescribable or another book that would encourage them to learn more about their faith. It could be taking them to a ministry to volunteer and explore what God might be calling them to do. It could be going for a hike in nature and pointing out all of the things God has created. Whatever you do, take time to reflect with them afterwards what God showed them and how it has affected their faith and be willing to share how it has affected your faith as well.
