Unshakable Hope with Max Lucado
What would you do tomorrow if you had no fear? Would you try a different profession? Would you travel the world? How would you live your life if you knew that the promises in the Bible are for you? What if God Himself put promises there meant for you and has an amazing plan for your life? Author and Pastor, Max Lucado shares how God has kept His promises in the lives of His people for all of history in Unshakable Hope Promise Book: Student Edition. Using examples from biblical characters and current examples from teens, Lucado helps the reader explore and understand the ways God has kept His promises then and how He keeps them
Lucado has spent the last 40 years telling the story of God’s grace in books, in pulpits, on broadcasts, on music tours and every chance he gets. He found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. Max’s message of God’s unfathomable grace has resonated with people around the world for the past thirty years, making Max one of the world’s most popular authors, selling nearly 100 million copies and occupying spots on every major national bestseller list. In addition to books, Lucado’s writing has been shaped into an additional 20 million products sold, including videos, devotionals, songs, plush toys, greeting cards, booklets, Bible studies, commentaries and theatrically-released movies.
Lucado grew up in a conservative home in a small West Texas town, he needed much grace from his oil mechanic father and nurse mother. He hit his teens years and rebellion kicked in. After one specific drunken night, Lucado had an awakening and began to wonder if there was more to life than parties and chasing girls. It was not long after that when his heart was moved toward the unconditional love of God through a Bible class while attending Abilene Christian University (ACU). “I might be able to find the very seat in which I was sitting when this grace found me. I was a twenty-year-old college sophomore. For four years, I had lived with the concrete block of guilt, not just from that first night of drunkenness, but also a hundred more like it. The guilt had made a mess of my life, and I was headed toward a lifetime of misery.” (From Lucado’s website).
In his book, each devotional has an inspiring story, scripture and questions that will help the reader reflect on their relationship with God. The devotionals are not the perfect length for a student to start their day in God’s Word. Unshakable Hope is a great gift for a student as they start out their school year or go off to college.
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.” Ephesians 1:17-19
Give a care package. It could be your child that has gone off to college, a relative or a friend from church, bless someone by creating a care package for them. It could include one of your favorite devotionals, it might include Unshakable Hope, and some fun snacks. Couple it with an encouraging note or prayer for them about how you have seen God working in their life and what your hope or prayer for them is for this school year. You might want to include a journal too so that they can write down all of the things God teaches them.
Find an unshakable friend. Life can be difficult at times and living for God can be even more challenging. Thankfully, God has given us fellowship with other believers to strengthen our faith and help us walk through life’s challenges. If you don’t have a faithful friend, pray and ask God to show you someone in your life that might be that friend. Sometimes, we limit what God can do through a friendship. Read a book together and share what God is teaching you through it. Hold each other accountable and pray with one another. Be willing to challenge the person when you see them slipping and be open to correction when they come to you too.
Reflect on God’s promises. Take time this week to reflect on the truth God has for you in His word. It might mean saying no to an activity with friends or it might mean waking up earlier so that you can read the Bible before work or other commitments. Find a character in the Bible that you resonate with. Pray and ask God to show you His truth as you read through their story. If there is a verse or phrase that sticks out, write it down and put it some place that you will see throughout the week.
